Golden Globes should go gold

How can we get the Golden Globes to "go gold" for pediatric cancer?  aall of their marketing and event materials are already gold, who can I talk to?  They should change the gold envelopes so they untie a gold ribbon at the ceremonious reveal.  They can make an announcement at the beginning of the programming just to explain that gold is the color of pediatric cancer awareness (it can take less than 10 seconds), they can show an impactful 60 second video and they can encourage celebrities to wear gold accessories, gold shoes, gold dresses, etc.  It's a win-win!

I vividly remember the first Academy Awards when all of the celebrities arrived wearing red ribbons on their lapels.  I will have to look it up, but I imagine that was the first ribbon used to draw awareness to an important health-related cause.  Pure Brilliance. Some time in the early 90's, there was barely a celebrity in sight who wasn't wearing a red ribbon at the award shows, and AIDS awareness finally made such a huge turn.  The ribbon started the tipping point.  Research was funded.  Life-saving treatments were discovered and huge awareness campaigns for prevention were launched.  Thank God.  Wonderful, amazing things have been accomplished on behalf of AIDS victims.  Now, let's see what can be done for pediatric cancer:
  • There are 15 children diagnosed with cancer for every one child diagnosed with pediatric AIDS. Yet, the U.S. invests approximately $595,000 for research per victim of pediatric AIDS and only $20,000 for each victim of childhood cancer.
I realize that cause ribbons are a dime a dozen now (how sad is it that so many worthy causes exist?) and so people don't really wear them... but everyone notices pink shoes in the NBA, pink towels in the NFL, etc... we need to have Little League AND Major League Baseball wearing gold shoelaces and yes, we need the Golden Globes to go gold for pediatric cancer.  We desperately need more athletes and celebrities to get behind the cause!  We need President Obama to pay more attention to to our kids! This is something I will spend a lot of time trying to accomplish in 2013, so I hope you don't feel burdened when I ask you to send a "tweet" or help grow the likes on Ty's facebook page.  The more saturated we can be in the market, the more attention we can get from those influencers who have the power to make a story go viral, the more success we will have raising awareness, increasing funding, funding research and finding better treatments for kids that WORK without crippling them.

Ty went through hell.  This was just before his 20th surgery.  His last surgery.  He is scared, swollen, sad and hurting... but he is also smiling and his hair never looked better.  Ty Campbell was extraordinary.  His spirit is everywhere.  I can only believe that he is being greatly rewarded in heaven for being the brave little soul that he was here on earth.

Everyone asks me how I'm doing.  I'm okay, but I'm infinitely sad.  I feel bad because I just don't have the same passion for life.  I have a lazy attitude because every single one of us will die soon enough.  What's it all for?  The only two things that keep me from falling into a black hole are Gavin and Ty.  I am devoted to letting Gavin have fun.  I give him so much love he can't breathe sometimes :)  He is my lifeline.  And for Ty, I do this.  I continue to share his story in the hopes that it will eventually be heard by millions who will help me make a difference just like each and every one of you already have.  I work on building an amazing foundation in his honor.   I look forward to sharing our progress with you every step of the way, and working with you all to make these dreams come true in honor of the best good boy in the whole wide world.

I love you, Ty.  Today was a tough day for your Daddy.  Please wrap him in the embrace of your spirit tonight :)  So he can feel your warmth and taste your breath while he sleeps.

  10. I totally agree! The Golden Globes should go GOLD! Brilliant idea! I would love to see this cause spread with the color gold everywhere. No child should have to go through what precious Ty did. We have to try to protect our little ones from this horrible disease. My prayers are always with Ty and your whole family. I hope Lou feels his sweet little Ty next to him tonight. XO. 11. I think awareness will make all the difference!!! I am so frustrated to see all the commercials asking people to do this for this cause and that for that cause...meanwhile, cancer is stealing our babies...our future! I have to admit, even before I became a mommy eight years ago, I also considered myself "plugged in" to kids and kid stuff... until I came across Ty, Lane Goodwin and Jessie Rees... How clueless I have been to such a threat!!! I am grateful that my two "puddle jumpers" are healthy... but it doesn't mean that I won't do anything I can to help share Ty's story and the need for a cure!!! Sending special blessings to you, Cindy and extra prayers for Lou...

  12. I want to wrap you all and show the love we all have for you & Ty. I am so sorry, again. I wish I could take your pain. If what I feel is this bad, I can not imagine your grief. I hope the awareness of this horrible disease comes to light with your efforts of awareness. I share Ty's story as much as I can. Tonight, after dinner, I had bought the kids new paint. I didn;t want a mess and becamse a but frustrated and finally gave in to let them paint. In the middle of all the construction paper I havd gotten out, there was a sticker of, yup, a ladybug. I smiled. I knew. Thank you, Ty. Thank you again Cindy. I hope Ty wraps his daddy tonight and sends you both a dream.

  15. The awareness for me started back in September when I heard Taylor Swift's song...before that I really didn't know much about childhood cancer. My eyes were opened and I believe that if we can get the word out -- people will change the funding...just as they have in the past for AIDS and breast cancer. So many people have said the following to me -- it's too sad to think about...don't most kids get cured...
I really think the world has a jaded view of cute bald kids with cancer...and I think it's cause you can't really get it until you live it -- that's where your blog and Maya's blog show the reality...also show that your once perfectly normal kid got cancer...too many people think it won't happen to them...and maybe it won't...but maybe it will. Regardless people need to start doing more, saying more...
And I can't think of two people who are better advocates for this nasty disease than you and Maya. I look forward to seeing the gold ribbons everywhere.

    1. I completely agree on all counts. I lived with the blinders on until I was enlightened by you, Cindy. A simple click on a link to a story in the local paper, and that was it for me. Done deal. As a fellow parent, I cannot turn away from this fight "just because" at this particular moment in time this is not my children's personal struggle. But it easily could be their struggle. It could be mine.

Cindy, you and Maya are building an entire community around awareness. We'll get this done. We'll make this happen. And along the way, we'll cry with you, scream with you, smile with you, and hope with you.

Big, big hugs to Lou. In the depths of grief, I am praying he finds moments of comfort, peace, and presence that Ty gives him.

    2. I agree with you both. It is so good to see people like you helping. It is so hard to get people to understand that paediatric cancer is not so rare and the cure rate is not so high. Yes it may be high for certain cancers but there are so many different cancers that most people have not even heard of and the success rate for many of these cancers is very very poor. What saddens me is that everyone hurries to help people in a natural or man made disasters by coming to there aid, the whole world hears about it and wants to help, celebrities do fundraising, governments all over the world hand out relief funds but when it comes to thousands of children dying from cancer each year hardly anyone hears about it. These children suffer every single day, they are dying every single day. I guess it's easier to deal with a short lived disaster than a long term one. People really do need to take their blinkers off and realise that it could happen to them. Yes it is a horrible thought but I too never thought it would ever happen to me and my family but it did. I just thank God we have people like Cindy and Maya who are really making a difference by sharing their stories with the world. I believe they will make the big guys sit up and take notice one day but they cannot do it without the help of others. So please keep sharing their stories and make people more aware. It won't happen over night but it will eventually happen.

  17. I couldn't agree more. While I agree there are so many worthwhile causes in this broken world, I do believe that cancer has probably touched almost everyone in this world with a family member or friend diagnosed. There needs to be more research into pediatric cancer for this innocent victims of such a destructive disease. I cannot help as far as the Golden Globes or Oscars as I know no body in show business but would ask if anyone does, please share Ty's story in honour of such a brave and beautiful boy. 19. Cindy, my heart is broken for you and Lou, I can't imagine your pain. I wish I could give Ty back to you, I think we all wish we could. Everytime I look at his angel face, my heart melts. You are such an inspirational force in my life as is Ty and Lou and Gavin. You share your emotions with such rawness, it would be impossible for those who read your words to not be moved and feel your loss so deeply. The loss of TY just doens't make sense to me and I guess there are things in this lifetime we are just not meant to understand, doesn't make it easier though. I know Ty is with you, he will continue to live through you and all who love him.

  20. Not only should golden globe go gold, all the celebrieties, all the parents and everyone around should know what gold stands for and fight for our babies, they deserve it more than anyone or anything and any disease in the world. I get mad many times when I tell people how much money is given to pediatric cancer out of the whole fund and they refuse to believe me and tell me to check my sources, others jiust dont want to hear because they have healthy kids and dont want to be overburdened with this sadness. I want to scream out loud that we should all put our efforts because its for our kids what do we have thats more important? if all parents teamed up imagine how much support we would have, how much money we would collect. Wow, doesnt Ty deserve all of this and more. We werent able to give this boy a cure, we didnt give him a break. He suffered and lived in pain almost all his life. Why is that not obvious where our priorities should be? But sadly its not. I dont get discouraged when my friends or family members dont want to hear about it, I get mad but I move on to someone new. I had few people on facebook that i encouraged to read about Ty and instantly they fell inlove and follow Ty story and share and donate. But celebrities should get on board. Tyler Swift is amazing but thats not enough, and this girl isnt even a parent herself. Where are all those fabulous celebrities moms who should care and wear only gold on september. On that note, dear Cindy, please let me know where I can get Ty tshirts i have been wanting to create my own but I want to buy from you as well since I know that the money will go into foundation. I miss you Ty. Im so sorry your mommy and daddy are sad everyday. Its the worse kind of pain and it knows no cure. I love you superTy.

  21. Hi - I have been reading your blog for quite some time now. I came upon your blog through a mutual friend. This is the first time I am posting on your blog. It's not that I haven't wanted to. I honestly just had no idea what to say until now that I thought might help you. I took my 2 year old son to the Thomas the train show at the Botanical Gardens this past Saturday and across the little theater I did a double take. There was this little blonde haired boy in the front row having a blast - smiling and laughing so loud that I heard him on the other end. And I instantly saw Ty - when I looked back - I saw your son sitting in that front row having just the best time. You always talk about signs and I believe this was one. Ty's story is reaching people from all over and hopefully knowing that will keep you going - one day at a time..

  22. Last night I was giving my son a bath and there was a ladybug crawling across the floor. I made my husband finish up with bathtime so I could go put the ladybug outside without harming it. My husband looked at me like I had two heads and said "All other bugs in our house are 'intruders' and must instantly die, but you're taking this ladybug outside? Uh, okay." In my head, I couldn't help thinking that maybe Ty's spirit was in that ladybug too, so I had to make sure it was safe. (Yes, a random story, but I just wanted to let you know that I think about your son often, especially whenever I see a ladybug. Love and prayers to you all, especially Lou today.)

  23. Hey Momma, We're going GOLD together!! There is a BIG GOLD movement growing. All of us Mommas are on the **same** wavelength. We are on the same page. We're not waiting for anyone to do it for us -- the time is now. YOU are an amazing inspiration and the awareness you're raising on your own is incredible. I am proud to stand with you -- to stand for Ty -- to make a difference in the lives of kids fighting cancer. To eradicate this disease. No momma ever should endure a fraction what you have.

  24. I came upon your page through a friend and have followed your story for some time. I am the President of our local Little League and we wear pink shoelaces and wristbands for breast cancer during October as several mom's in our league were fighting the disease when we started. I think wearing gold laces during ped cancer month is a wonderful idea. I intend to bring it up at our next Presidents meeting and will be contacting Williamsport to see if we can make this a national thing and not just local to our league. If you see Little Leaguers wearing the gold laces, it's for Ty.

There is just something special about him, something in his eyes, his smile that draws us in and Cindy you and Lou are just as special. I can't stop thinking about you guys! It hurts me to know of the pain that you as a family has endured! I wear my SuperTy shirt everywhere's... casual Fridays at work, when I go out on the weekends, its become a staple in my wardrobe. I have one for my boys too that I put on them all the time! My 5 year old loves wearing it! I try and spread the word as often as possible and I feel at times it's just not enough! I wanna bring Ty back to you which I know is impossible, but that's how I feel! I wanna bring him back!!! I hope Lou had a better day today! You guys are always in my heart and thoughts!

  27. I've been going to church regularly (with my daughter who is preparing for confirmation), and every time I am there I have a little conversation with God asking Him how is Ty doing? I picture Ty cancer free and running around just like a 5 year old should be. I know it's probably little comfort to you, for your heart naturally aches for your son to be here with you. I pray that time will work some small miracle and one day lessen the pain you feel today. And I pray that one day gold ribbons raise awareness (and money) to this dreadful disease.

The Golden Globes has a twitter page - Tweet them and we can all retweet you!!!

Every day I think of Ty and wish he was here with you all - I can't imagine your pain but I also wish all the time that I could something to ease your suffering. I'll be here to help in the fight - I promise - I'm committed to making a difference because no child should have to go through what Ty did. SuperTy always and forever.

  32. Why don't we create little jars of gold ribbons that business owners can buy and sell to their customers.. each ribbon could be attached to a little paper explaining some facts about pediatric cancer... You can make the display jar really eye catching and when the business sells all the ribbons they can order more... you have such a big following on the blog I am sure there are a lot of business owners or people who know people.. it would be a great start and a way to raise money and awareness.. I would definitely buy one to put on my counter

  45. Hi There. I work in the entertainment industry and know a little bit about the HFPA (organization that produces the golden globes). You can probably contact their main office or their publicist and see what they can do. I believe all the media/publicity info is available on the HFPA website. Hope this helps!

  47. Cindy,
I have been reading your blog for some time, and check it daily to see what you have written about. I tweet, share and post yours and Ty's story with friends, family, co-workers and even clients. The story must be shared. Knowledge must be given. I wish I wasn't able to thank you for sharing this with all of us, but it has made me a better mom and a better person.
This particular post is one I shared on Facebook and asked for ideas and feedback. One friend brought up that while social media has proven to do amazing things, perhaps it's time to send actual mail. That perhaps each of us that read your blog should print out multiple copies of this post and mail it into the Golden Globes, to Katie Couric, to The View, etc. This may be something you are already doing, but if not, I am more than willing to look for addresses and provide the information. I also know that my friends and family across the US would participate. Everyone must be made aware of the need of pediatric cancer research, and Ty's story is just the way to help to do that.

Please know I carry you and your family in my heart with me every day. My little boy WILL jump in mud puddles, and as he gets older, he will also learn about Ty.
